From the Treasurer: Quips from your Treasurer...

Dear Friends,

This is the first of perhaps more to come of comments from your treasurer. Many of you already know me. My name is Dean Mielke and I can be seen at the 9 am service on many Sundays and sometimes on Saturday sitting in the office at the desk facing a computer monitor.

For over 23 years I have been serving as the executive officer for a presbyterian church extension fund known as the Mission Development Certificate and Loan Program. We are a financial ministry serving presbyterian churches in Alaska, Washington and Idaho. I tell my friends my job is a balancing act of giving to Caesar what is Caesar’s and of giving to God what is His or what my wife might say Give to God what is hers.

Earlier this month we read letters from Paul to Timothy. I was struck by two lines in particular. I am paraphrasing… avoid wrangling over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth.

Wow! How often do I find myself wrangling over words and money? Paul hit it out of the park when he said it does little good to wrangle and often confuses others around us. We are facing some very difficult economic times that are touching all of us. I grew up in a large family. My parents instilled in us that money is not the only currency we have. We also have our gifts of presence (or time) and sharing our talents. We also grew up with our extended church family. We knew that we were welcome whether rich or poor and the rewards of giving and sharing was a wonderful feeling.

So here we are in the midst of our stewardship campaign. We are prayerfully considering our pledge. We know St. Columba’s budget next year will be challenging. Our Bishop’s Committee is working hard to fulfill the goals established earlier this year.  Our pledges are an important part of accomplishing our goals, along with our gifts of time and talent.  As your treasurer I hope that we all can consider what gifts we can share to make next year successful.

If you have any questions about the finances of St. Columba’s, just ask me. May God continue to guide and bless St. Columba and each of you.

Moose (aka Dean Mielke)
