Introducing our new Priest Associate: The Rev. Whitney DeVine
St. C's is proud to welcome The Rev. Whitney DeVine as a priest associate! Whitney and her husband Craig have been attending St. Columba's for several months, and are already an important part of our community, although many may be unaware that Whitney is a priest! In her new role as priest associate, you will see Whitney assisting at the altar for some Sundays and special liturgies, and preaching from time to time. She will also continue being a parishioner here, worshiping from the pews and participating in our community as a congregant and cherished member.
What is a Priest Associate? A priest associate is a priest who chooses to be affiliated with a congregation and live out her priestly ministry there without a paid leadership role. Often priest associates are clergy who are retired or who are bi-vocational and have paid work outside of congregational ministry.
Tell me more about Whitney!
Whitney Jones DeVine hails from Memphis, Tennessee where she was one of the first 2 women ordained a deacon in the Diocese of West Tennessee, married a week later to Craig and moved to Seattle, all within a month's time in 1988. In the Diocese of Olympia, she served as deacon assistant at the Pike Market Ministry and as priest associate at St. Francis, Mill Creek, Epiphany, Seattle, as vicar at Grace Church, Duvall and priest associate at Resurrection, Bellevue - all from 1988 to 2007. She also served numerous Kairos and Cursillo week-ends.
During this time, she and Craig's family grew from 2 to 6 with the birth of David, then Aubrey and the adoption of Sara and Nathan from Vietnam. All 4 are in their 20's and finding their own paths in the world.
In 2007, with 4 children at home, and faced with the prospect of finding a new job, but not wanting to uproot, Whitney decided to return to Nursing, her original university degree with the goal of working in hospice. She currently works for Providence Hospice of Seattle, serving southeastern King County.
Last year, Whitney and Craig made an unexpected and fun decision to sell their Bellevue home of 26 years and buy a home on Lake Tapps. They found their way to St. Columba's where they immediately felt at home.
Welcome Whitney and Craig! We are so glad you are here with us!!
