Update on Community Garden at St. C's
For anyone who has been curious about the community garden at St. C's see the full update from the Program Coordinator at International Rescue Committee (IRC) below.
Short Summary:
- The garden plots are open for use and seen as an essential source of food for our neighbors.
- The shared gardening shed will be closed until further notice and people are being asked to bring their own tools.
- The plants continue to grow and these gardens are providing hope and nutrients to our neighbors.
An Update from Deepa Iyer, the Senior New Roots Program Coordinator (edited for shortening purposes):
As of March, the IRC staff went fully remote. Across all offices and programs, all staff are calling clients to assess needs, ensure they have the most up-to-date information in their languages, and continue working to provide services such as support to apply for unemployment, authorize EBT and other benefits, etc.
IRC clients including gardeners are among the groups that are and will be the hardest hit by this crisis. Some families are already experiencing food hardship and we are working to help them access emergency food resources, as well as developing a strategy that will help families stay food secure over the next few months. We will be referring folks to St C food pantry as well.
As far as the garden programs, some gardeners at St C's are not leaving their homes even to visit their garden plots. However there are many families who continue to garden because they view the plots as an essential source of food and they want to continue spending time outside in a safe place.. The tool shed is closed, so gardeners will need to bring their own tools and hoses. Though the coronavirus has stopped much human activity, the plants continue to grow, that is a ray of hope for us, and for the gardeners as well.
