From the Family Minister: David and Goliath
Working on the Children's Spirituality Series for our Facebook page has me feeling more confident about test running spiritual conversations with my own kids. This afternoon, we spent a couple blissful hours in the front yard with our home-made water park, which involved a slip-n-slide and two kiddie pools. Cleaning up afterwards with one of my children, they found my bible, abandoned on the front porch after filming yesterday, and they asked me to read! "What do you want to hear?" --- "The story about the one who fought the Giant!". A quick look at the index in the back brought me to 1 Samuel 17: David and Goliath, and I read the whole chapter, with appropriate pauses to wonder about aspects of the story such as the fact Goliath was as tall as two men. Reading the story of David, described as a good looking reddish brown boy (1 Samuel 17:42), I got to watch my baby enter the story, "he looks like me?!", and wonder what it would be like to be a shepherd boy confident enough in God that he'd fought lions, and bears, and all he needed to defeat Goliath was a single shot with a good stone. Today, I told my baby that with God, they could do anything, and after clarifying that it is "anything for the glory of God, like taking care of others or doing the right thing", I think they believed with me.
